DOHA: The sixth edition of the Materials Science and Engineering Symposium hosted by Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) brought together experts from academic institutions, research centres, industry and government organisations to discuss latest advances in materials science and engineering.
Dr Mark H Weichold, Dean and CEO, said, “TAMUQ is proud to partner with academic and industry collaborators such as Qatar University (QU), Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) and Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) to help realise sustainable solutions to real-world challenges and encourage exchange of knowledge, ideas and expertise essential to fuel innovation and new thinking.
“The symposium illustrates the importance of industry, academic and government partnerships in developing scientific solutions that have direct impact on the world around us.”
Speakers, presenters and poster presenters focused on the symposium theme ‘Building Capacity, Knowledge Transfer and Education in Materials Science and Engineering’ to support research challenges in Qatar.
The event was co-organised by QU, QEERI and TAMUQ and supported through sponsorship from Qapco.
In his keynote speech, Dr Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla, Vice-Chairman and CEO, Qapco, described sponsoring the symposium as an honour and highlighted benefits of innovation and its impact on the next generation of materials.
“Our modern society is dependent on advanced materials: lightweight composites for faster vehicles, optical fibres for telecommunications and silicon microchips for the information revolution and many polymer-related applications.
“The fascinating element about materials science is that the outcome of research projects are tangible and directly impact our lives. Knowledge transfer and education in materials science and engineering is essential,” he said.
The symposium featured speakers from top international academic institutions, QEERI, QU, TAMUQ and industry and served as a platform to foster interdisciplinary future collaborations among participants.
It also included a poster session with a competition of separate tracks for students and researchers.
First-place winners from each track received QR5,000 and second-place winners QR3,000. Students and researchers presented the outcomes of their research and impact on advancing the industry in Qatar.
