MANILA: Four people were missing after a huge garbage dump collapsed just outside the Philippine capital yesterday, the provincial police chief said.
The maintenance men who worked on the dump site in the town of Rodriguez could not be found after the rubbish pile collapsed, authorities said.
Officials had hoped the four had gone home before the accident but their relatives confirmed they could not be accounted for following the avalanche.
Although rescue teams were dispatched, the darkness and soft ground made it difficult to continue the search at night. “The employees were removing water, which might have contributed to the accident,” an official said, adding the slide may have happened because the pile of garbage was high.
