Kolkata: Taking cognisance on its own of the death of a class 3 student in West Bengal after he was mercilessly beaten by his schoolteacher, India’s apex child rights panel yesterday said it has sought a detailed report from the state’s Mamata Banerjee government.

“We have taken a suo motu cognisance of the case and directed the state government to send us a report on the incident within 10 days,” National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) member Vinod Tikku said here.

Ten-year-old Bapi Joardar, a student of Nirdeshkhali Notunpara Sishu Siksha Kendra at Basanti in South 24 Parganas district, died at the state-run SSKM hospital Friday morning.

He was brought to the city hospital after he was beaten by his teacher and his head banged against a wall. The teacher, Champa Mondal, has been arrested and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder slapped against her. IANS
