SEOUL: Sales of Hyundai vehicles in India dipped 5.9 percent in July from a year earlier amid declining demand in the world's second most populous country, data showed Monday.

South Korea's largest carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. sold 26,000 units in India in July, according to the data compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and Hyundai's Korea Automotive research institute, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

It marked the first time since December that Hyundai's monthly sales have dropped below 30,000 units.

For the first seven months, Hyundai sold 223,000 units in India, down 5 percent from a year ago, according to the data.

Hyundai's performance is in line with poor vehicle sales in India.

In July, a total of 179,000 units were sold, down 7.9 percent from a year earlier, according to the data.

Still, Hyundai was in second place in terms of market share by accounting for 14.5 percent in July, according to the data.

Hyundai trailed behind India's biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki, which took a 42 percent share of the domestic market. (QNA)
