DOHA: Coaches of the newly-formed Q League believe that the new competition will benefit clubs and football in Qatar.
The Q League will feature 18 teams, 14 of which are Reserve sides and four Second Division teams.
Al Sadd coach Abdul Rehman Sulemani said the idea is a ‘good initiative’. He said: “The league is a good initiative and can help promote themselves (the players) in the main league.”
Muaither coach, Saleet Mohammed echoed Sulemani’s view. Mohammed said: “It is a good idea to mix the teams which will help give experience to players which is very important. It is a big opportunity to show their qualities and this can help them back into the first team.”
Serbia coach Slavko Matic of Al Ahli said: “The amount of matches is not much for the team, but I think with a squad of 30 players it’s enough. But the league will be good to improve players.”
Former Hibernian (of the Scottish Premier League) assistant coach Brian Rice, now in charge of Al Khor is relishing the chance to play against the Second Division teams.
Rice said: “It will be good for my players to play against the Second Division teams. It is a good way to promote football and we want to do our best and try to enjoy it.”
William Masiano of Al Rayyan believes it would be better to have an extra five players in the squad. Masiano said: “I think it’s a very good idea to do this. It will help players and clubs be more competitive. But it would be better to have five more players in the squad.” THE PENINSULA
