LA TRINIDAD: The “Guinaang” tribal folks in Pasil town in Kalinga province have rejected a mining application over at least 3,000 hectares of ancestral lands. In a manifesto of the Guinaang Indigenous People Organisation, the folks signified their rejection of the proposed mining application of the Makilala Mining Co Inc (MMC). The manifesto signed by 700 representatives of the tribes in six barangays in Pasil are asking the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples to declare the MMC application “a failure”.

MANILA: The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is exploring the possibility of putting up a mass transit subway system to decongest Metro Manila’s major roads, particularly EDSA, an official said yesterday. DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said in an interview with reporters that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has offered to conduct a feasibility study to establish a subway system in the Philippines patterned after other countries.

MANILA: Two rebels were arrested with 13 firearms after separate clashes with soldiers in Negros over the weekend. Maj Ray Tiongson, spokesman for the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, said they also received reports that two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed and six others were wounded.
