DOHA: Civil staff involved in cleaning up public places have discovered more than a dozen carcasses of camels and sheep on Al Shamal beach during a clean-up drive.
The drive was undertaken during the first two days of the Eid Al Adha festival when civic staff saw and removed the carcasses. Carcasses of some 11 camels and eight sheep were removed.
Municipal officials believe the animals might have died while being shipped and dumped in the sea. It is also likely that the carcasses were washed ashore, said a senior official.
The head of public cleaning at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, Safar Mubarak Al Shafi, told the local Arabic daily Al Arab: “It looks the animals were dumped by a passing cargo vessel carrying livestock”.
He said authorities had been contacted to ascertain the cause of the death of these animals.
Al Shafi said the beach clean-up in Al Shamal was launched by the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning ministry in coordination with the Ministry of Environment. The Peninsula
