Doha: The State of Qatar has welcomed Australia’s announcement to cancel the previous government’s recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, considering that the decision would support international efforts aimed at achieving a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Qatar’s aspiration for similar decisions by the countries that recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in line with the international consensus and resolutions of international legitimacy.
The ministry warned against unilateral steps that could undermine the principle of a two-state solution.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the firm position of Qatar on the justice of the Palestinian cause, the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people, and the establishment of their independent state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
