Beirut: Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun discussed on Monday developments in Lebanon and the region, as well as efforts to support the Lebanese state, with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, who is currently visiting Lebanon.
In a statement following the meeting, Fahmy affirmed support for Lebanon and all its institutions, pledging to stand by it politically, economically and socially.
He also announced plans to visit southern Lebanon amid repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanese citizens and interests, saying he would work to direct the Arab League’s efforts toward supporting Lebanon and its state institutions.
He said political and diplomatic efforts concerning Lebanon would be intensified, stressing full Arab support for its negotiations with Israel.
For his part, the Lebanese president said Israel had failed to abide by the framework agreement and that southern Lebanon remains subject to daily violations. He said these violations achieve nothing but strengthen the Lebanese people’s resolve to hold on to their land and rights. Nonetheless, it hinders the Lebanese state’s efforts to achieve its stated objectives.
Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to a diplomatic solution, despite its difficulties, saying it is far less costly than a devastating war for which the Lebanese people, particularly those in the south, were paying the price. He added that it was time for Lebanon to enjoy peace.
He also welcomed any Arab League efforts or initiatives to help Lebanon overcome the difficult period it is facing, noting that the League had stood by Lebanon through various stages.
