DOHA: Pageantry and pride was spread all over the Corniche as the Qatari armed forces paraded on ground, water and air yesterday making the culmination of a week-long National Day celebrations.
The Qatari Armed Forces, Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Al Fazaa, and the Emiri Guard marched, while battle tanks and multi rocket launchers rolled along the Doha seafront and fighter jets flew overhead during the hour-long parade. It showcased Qatar’s strength and determination toward its national security and the transformation of the country’s defence over the past years.
The country’s national anthem was the start of the traditional grand parade along the Corniche. After a recitation from the Holy Quran, a cannon gun salute to the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was given on his arrival.
The Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir’s Personal Representative H H Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Special Adviser to the Emir H H Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani and the adviser to the Emir, H H Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Thani were also present along with ministers, diplomats and dignitaries.
A pageantry of Arabian horses and camels paraded exhibiting the traditions of the nation.
Skydivers from Lekhwiya’s rescue team capped the event as they descended with Qatari flags near the pavilion where dignitaries were seated. The parade included infantry columns of the army, the police and the Emiri guard. They exhibited a wide range of armoured vehicles, both traditional and modern military equipment.
New generation battle tanks, sophisticated radars, airborne early warning systems, armoured personal carriers, missile assemblies and rocket launchers and satellite communication devices were exhibited.
An air show of fighter jets and helicopters was also seen along with naval boats. Fighter jets sprayed Qatar’s national colours in formations while choppers and fighter jets flew over head. The fast attack black navy boats dashed into the waters in midst of traditional boats. The Peninsula
