DOHA: The Azerbaijan embassy in Qatar is marking today the 24th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of the country which is observed as a Black Day.
The embassy will commemorate those who died in the invasion, with an event at its premises to be attended by diplomatic corps in Qatar.
It was on January 20, 1990 when Soviet troops invaded Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, to strangle the independence movement and prevent the fall of the Soviet Communist regime in Azerbaijan.
“Despite the fact that a few years have passed since those bloody days, our nation remembers that dreadful night and expresses its deep contempt for those who committed that tragedy.
“Our republic marks the day of tragedy of January 20 every year as a Day of Sorrow,” the embassy in Qatar said in a press release yesterday.
Embassy gears up for Republic Day celebrations
Doha: The Indian embassy will hold a flag-hoisting ceremony to mark the 65th Republic Day of India at 8.30am on Sunday, January 26.
Ambassador Sanjiv Arora will hoist the Indian flag and read the address of President Pranab Mukherjee. Students of Indian schools will participate in the programme. Refreshments will be served. All Indians are invited to attend the function.
