DOHA: Organic vegetables offered by a local farm are being sold for the first time at Al Mazrouah Yard, almost at the prices of original produce.
The prices of organic vegetables are about five times more than those grown traditionally in local markets (malls and shopping complexes) but are available at affordable prices at the yard, said the Ministry of Environment in a statement.
Organic produce at the winter market are attracting a large number of consumers, especially Arabs and foreigners.
Organic vegetables are natural produce and chemicals are not used to grow them. They are quality produce with good taste, claimed the ministry.
A total of 972 tonnes of fresh vegetables and 398 tonnes of fruits have been sold in the past seven weeks at seasonal vegetable markets — Al Mazrouah Yard, Al Khor Yard and Al Wakra Yard.
Fresh meat, fish and chickens are also available at Al Mazrouah Yard and Al Khor and Al Zakhira Yard yards offer only fish along with fruits and vegetables.
Al Wakra Yard that was opened this year is offering only fruits and vegetables.
Thirty-three tonnes of fresh fish, 456 sheep and 4,775 chickens have been sold at these markets since the beginning of the season until January 17, the ministry said.
Al Mazrouah Yard ranked first with sale of 401 tonnes of fresh vegetables, 91 tonnes of fruits, 22 tonnes of fish, 456 sheep and 896 chickens followed by Al Khor and Al Zakhira. The highest number of chickens were sold at Al Wakra Yard (2,868 pieces) followed by Al Khor and Al Zakhira (1,011 pieces each).
The yards are open from Thursday to Saturday from 7am to 5pm.The Peninsula
