DOHA: Marking the transition from winter to summer, Qatar is likely to experience sudden changes in weather from today, with chances of a dust storm, rains and a dip in temperature.

This seasonal phenomenon which the locals call “Serraya” has been attributed to a low pressure over the Gulf region.

“Qatar experiences this condition every year usually from mid-March until the beginning of April. This period is marked by sudden and unexpected changes in weather conditions. Strong winds and rains could be expected on some days, and the weather will return to normal, with chances of a recurrence of such conditions,” Abdullah Al Mannai, Director of Forecast and Analysis Department at the Meteorology Department told this newspaper last evening.

According to a statement issued by the Department yesterday, thunderstorms are expected today and tomorrow.

The Department has warned of poor visibility and high seas during this period resulting from strong dust laden winds.

The weather would remain cloudy today with chances of scattered rains. The northwesterly to northeasterly winds would blow at speeds ranging from 10 to 25 knots. Temperature in Doha would remain between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius.
