The project will culminate in a recycled model in the form of a pond with water, fish, birds and flowers.
Doha: The Middle East’s most innovative urban development, The Pearl Qatar, will organise ‘The Trash to Treasure’ art project 2014 in association with Qatar Green Building Council. It will be completed over four consecutive weekend days — March 21, 22, 28 and 29.
“We are proud to organise and launch the project,” Saeed Al Sulaiti, Director of Operations, The Pearl-Qatar, said. “The initiative highlights the island’s commitment to environmental responsibility and promote innovative ways of managing waste, adding a new dimension to programmes in place at the island in support of the environment.”
Aimed at highlighting the amount of waste people produce and introducing creative and artistic ways of dealing with trash, the project will culminate in a recycled model in the form of a pond with water, fish, birds and flowers.
Several volunteers from all walks of life will come together to complete it, driving the message through that reducing waste, reusing and recycling it is the way to minimise negative effects of waste on the environment, and encouraging the community to think about and engage in practices contributing to environmental sustainability.
“The Pearl-Qatar implements an excellent environmental programme that includes a ban on plastic bags on the island,” Roger Dagher, Director of Corporate Communications, United Development Company, the master developer of The Pearl-Qatar, said.
“We support community and environmental initiatives and will continue to promote projects and programme to protect and enhance Qatar’s environment and quality of life, and consequently the world’s.”
The project involves collection of 60,000 bottle caps, bottles, bags, plates and spoons.
Artist Patric Rozario, of Visual Arts Forum India (VAFI), and as other artists will participate.
VAFI is credited with preparing the ‘pond’ design, and many of its members will play roles in building the 3D pond project, to be unveiled on March 29 in celebration of Earth Hour.
The project 2014 is sponsored by Jotun, Spinneys and Qatar Plastic Products Company, and designed by VAFI.
The Pearl-Qatar will also glow by candlelight, joining communities and organisations around the world to celebrate Earth Hour.
