The students, enrolled at Barcelona University as part of the European Erasmus exchange programme, were returning from a traditional festival in the eastern city of Valencia when the driver "hit the railing on the right and swerved to the left so violently that the bus veered onto the other side of the highway," Jordi Jane, who heads interior matters for the Catalonia region, said. Madrid: Games in Spain's top two divisions will hold a minute's silence before kick-off on Sunday in memory of the 13 people killed in a bus crash carrying foreign exchange students in the north-east of the country.

"Professional football joins in the signs of condolence and expresses its solidarity with the relatives and friends of the victims," the Spanish football league said in a statement.

Forty-four people were also injured in the accident near the small town of Freginals, about 150 kilometres (95 miles) south of Barcelona, as the bus was returning from a popular traditional festival in Valencia.

La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid will be amongst those to honour the victims as they face Villarreal and Sevilla respectively.
