Islamabad: Five more persons were killed in overnight firing and violent incidents in different parts of this mega-metropolis city, Pakistan’s Geo News reported yesterday. Police said that unknown assailants opened fire on a vehicle killing van driver Imran at sector 5-C2 of North Karachi in the vicinity of Khawaja Ajmernagri police station. One person was killed and two injured in firing near Korangi crossing, Bhittai Colony.
Two bodies were recovered from Landhi Bhains Colony and Juna Market in the old city area, while the body of a young boy was found near Machchar Colony stop on Mauripur Road. Meanwhile, one stray bullet coming from unknown direction killed one minor girl at Malir.
Ex-CM to take oath as federal minister
ISLAMABAD: Former chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Akram Khan Durrani, will become part of the federal cabinet representing the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) next week after the first expansion in the cabinet. It is likely that seven ministers or ministers of state and an adviser to the Prime Minister would be included in the federal cabinet. Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, member of the National Assembly of the PML-N from Bahawalpur, who couldn’t turn up at the oath taking ceremony of the first batch of ministers of state last week, will also take oath.
Pakistan tests new quake proof building
PESHAWAR: The Earthquake Engineering Centre (EEC) of Pakistan yesterday performed the first test in the country on a full-scale retrofitted confined brick masonry building to determine its seismic capacity and risk assessment for future earthquakes.
Such buildings had withstood the October 2005 Kashmir earthquake and thus, prompting the launch of a research to examine the possibility of putting up such buildings in other earthquake-prone areas, says a press release issued here.
The test was performed by Dr Khan Shahzada, associate professor at the civil engineering department of University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Peshawar. Agencies
