SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico: Puerto Ricans are marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria with choirs, protests and a funeral procession.
Thursday's events are meant to remember those who died in the Category 4 storm and to protest the conditions of tens of thousands still struggling in the aftermath of the hurricane. It killed an estimated 2,975 people and is estimated to have caused more than $100 billion in damage.
Commemorations began at dawn as a choir gathered on the beach where Maria made landfall and sang an emblematic song of the island. Marches and memorials were planned throughout the day.
Major power outages are still being reported, tens of thousands of insurance claims remain unresolved and nearly 60,000 homes still have temporary roofs that can't withstand a Category 1 hurricane.
