DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has denied plans to allot easy-to-remember numbers to graves in Abu Hamour cemetery.
Local Arabic daily Al Raya reported yesterday that there was a discussion on the local social media recently about graves in Abu Hamour cemetery being allotted easy-to-remember numbers for a fee of QR5,000.
Commentators suggested that like a telecom operator auctioning unique mobile phone numbers and the Traffic Department allotting easy-to-remember car registration numbers, Abu Hamour cemetery authorities are mulling providing easy-to-remember grave numbers, too.
The daily said it seems someone on social networking sites was making fun of the craze of some for unique mobile phone and car registration numbers.
While many got the humour, some did not and they even made enquiries about how to obtain those numbers.
The daily said it spoke to a source in the municipal ministry which denied there are any unique number allotment plans for graves at the cemetery.
“Grave numbers are allotted to the kith and kin of the dead after burial. We have a set numbering process and we wouldn’t change that,” the source said.
