Doha, Qatar: Juan Martin del Potro, former No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings, is among the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s Class of 2027 nominees, which were announced yesterday.

The Argentine is joined by WTA stars Ash Barty and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the ballot’s Player Category, which recognises ATP and WTA players who have achieved a distinguished record of competitive achievement at the highest international level.

Del Potro amassed 22 tour-level titles throughout his standout career, including his 2009 US Open triumph during which he downed Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the semi-finals and final, respectively.

Against Federer, Del Potro recovered from two sets to one down, eventually stunning the five-time defending champion. Del Potro finished that 2009 season as the youngest player in the Top 10.

In 2016, Del Potro led Argentina to its first Davis Cup title and also earned a silver medal in singles at the Rio Olympics.
