DOHA: The Laboratory and Standardisation Department at the Ministry of Environment has said that it will issue a new set of Qatar-specifications for construction materials by the beginning of 2014. The new specifications will be mandatory for all companies.
Dr Mohammad bin Saif Al Kuwari, Assistant Under Secretary at the Ministry and the Head of the Laboratories and Standardization Department, said that his department is monitoring companies to ensure that they are following the specifications set by the Ministry while preparing ready-mix, blocks and asphalt, among other items.
Currently the specifications of 2010 are being implemented. Factories cannot import any construction material that is not certified by laboratories here.
Samples are collected at random by the Ministry, which are then tested at the Laboratory. Al Kuwari noted that legal action can be taken against companies that are found violating the standards set by the Ministry. He, however, added that a majority of companies meet the specifications that have been enforced in Qatar.
