DOHA: More than 40 primary school teachers from many Independent schools have been selected to take part in the 2014 Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy, a professional development programme to enhance maths and science teaching skills.
In its third year, the academy, a collaboration between National Center for Educator Development, Qatar University (QU) and ExxonMobil Qatar, will run from November 22 to 27. QU and the Supreme Education Council selected educators based on qualifications and commitment to teaching.
They will attend a week-long, intensive professional development programme to help fourth, fifth and sixth grade educators develop innovative maths and science teaching skills, which will help them inspire students to develop an interest in both subjects.
They will engage in activities in a classroom setting, conducted by experts to guide them on how to adopt a more creative and engaging pedagogy with active learners.
This year, five teachers from Teach for Qatar will join the academy, following a partnership between ExxonMobil Qatar and Teach for Qatar, formalised in September.
Teach for Qatar, a local NGO chaired by H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, provides graduates and young professionals who wish to give back to Qatar — nationals or residents — an opportunity to inspire students through a two-year teaching placement.
“Science and maths are important in a child’s education, and it is essential that both are taught in the best way possible, using the right resources,” said Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad, President, QU.
“Our educators are committed to ensuring that they teach our children to the best of their ability, and the academy provides them with a platform to enhance skills to do so,” she added. The Peninsula
