DOHA: A criminal court has sentenced an expatriate driver and a housemaid to a year in jail for having illicit relationship and giving birth to a girl and killing her.
The baby was killed immediately after her birth. DNA tests on the orders of the court confirmed that the parents of the newborn were the convicts.
The maid killed the baby to avoid embarrassment and legal repercussions.
The local Arabic daily Al Watan reported yesterday that the public prosecution had accused the duo of having illicit relationship as they were not married.
A medical report suggested that the maid stuffed tissue papers into the nostrils of the girl and tied her nose and mouth with plastic to prevent her from breathing. A citizen brought the matter to light by informing Al Shamal Police that his maid had strangulated and thrown the baby in their bathroom. The maid was arrested, and during questioning she confessed.
