Sydney: A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck Monday off the coast of New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific Ocean, the US Geological Survey said.
The epicentre was located 82 kilometres east-northeast of the town of Tadine in the country's Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, which lies in the South Pacific's Ring of Fire.
The quake, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres below the seabed, triggered tsunami waves, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii said.
The centre warned of "hazardous tsunami waves" for coasts within 300 kilometres of the epicentre.
