DOHA: The proposed Gulf Union is expected to be announced in mid-2013, London-based daily Asharq Al Awsat reported yesterday, quoting a Bahraini official.
The official revealed that the Gulf Union that will take the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) from a stage of “coperation” to one of “union,” would be announced at a consultative summit scheduled to be held in Saudi capital Riyadh next year. He, however, didn’t give details about the number of states that will initially comprise this international organization, said the daily.
Deputy Speaker of Bahraini Parliament, Adel Al Mouwda told Asharq Al Awsat that the Bahraini Foreign Minister had informed the parliament that the decision will not be announced at the forthcoming GCC summit scheduled to begin in December 24 in Manama.
However, this may be announced at the consultative summit to be hosted by Riyadh in mid-2013, he added, without giving details about the timing or content of this announcement.
“The Kingdom of Bahrain has already appointed its representative to the body of the Union which has been created in order to put the Saudi proposal in place,” he was quoted as saying by the daily.
