The Monthly Producer Price Index (PPI) of the Industrial sector for October is estimated at 49.9 points, showing an increase of 7.3 percent compared to September 2016, helped by the increase noticed in “Mining”, and “Manufacturing” sectors.
The index has fallen 10.7 percent when compared to the PPI of same month previous year, said the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) in a statement yesterday.
PPI covers goods relating to “Mining” having a weightage of 72.7 percent, “Manufacturing” with a weightage of 26.8 percent and “Electricity & Water” weightage of 0.5 percent.
The PPI of mining sector in October showed an increase of 9.9 percent compared with PPI of September 2016, primarily due to the increase in prices of “Crude petroleum and natural gas”. The index of October 2016, compared with same month in the previous year, has seen a significant fall of 12.1 percent.
The PPI of manufacturing sectors registered an increase of 2.2 percent in October, compared with the previous month’s manufacturing index during this year. The price increase was seen in “Refined Petroleum Products” group by 4.3 percent, “Basic Chemicals” by 1.4 percent, "Other Chemical products” by 0.9 percent, “Dairy products” by 0.4 percent, “Beverages” by 0.3 percent and “Grain Mill products” by 0.1 percent.
However, decline in prices was noticed in “Basic Metals” by 5.8 percent, “Juices” by 5.5 percent, “Rubber and Plastics products” by 1 percent, and “Cement and other Non-metallic products” by 0.2 percent. No change was noticed in “Paper and Paper Products”.
Comparing with the index of counterpart in the previous year (October 2015), Manufacturing PPI of October, 2016 showed a decline of 8.2 percent.
“Basic Chemicals” group declined by 15.7 percent, “Basic Metals” by 14.5 percent, “Refined Petroleum Products” by 5.3 percent,“Cement and other Non-metallic products” by 1.5 percent,“Grain Product” by 1.1 percent, and “Dairy products” by 0.7 percent.
However, price rise was noticed in “Other Chemical products” by 18 percent, “Juices” by 12.5 percent, “Rubber and Plastic product” by 9 percent, and “Beverages” by 2.6 percent. No change was noticed in “Paper and Paper Products”.
The PPI of ‘Electricity and water’ group registered a fall of 4.3 percent compared to September 2016, resulting from the decline in prices seen in “Electricity” by 2 percent, and “Water” by 6.9 percent. When compared the PPI of October, 2016, to the PPI of October, 2015, this group showed an increase of 1 percent, resulting from the price rise in “Water” by 15.7 percent, and fall in “Electricity” by 8.9 percent.
