DOHA: The Souq Waqif Spring Festival 2015 featuring shows and entertainment programmes in several venues starts this Friday.
Dolphin shows, plays, games, street shows and workshops are among the activities for the 15-day festival.
Al Rayyan Theatre will host two children’s plays — Shaun the Sheep and Karameesh which will staged twice daily.
Skills games and entertainment activities will be held at Al Ahmed Square from 3.30pm to 10.30pm.
In addition, pony and camel rides will be held near Al Koot Fort. Visitors will be entertained by 10 teams of performers, including Stripes Circus, Palettes, Roaming Clowns, Robot, Nomad Street Drummers, Penguins, Lighting UFO, Light of Wonders, Human Robots and The Birds and the Explorer.
The groups from various countries will perform at Souq Alley.
There will also be art workshops and competitions as well as plastic and mural arts at Souq Waqif Art Centre.
Mohammed Salem, Director, Souq Waqif, and member of the festival committee, said this year’s festival will be different and see an increase in the number of visitors, especially with the recent opening of the new underground car park which can accommodate up to 2,000 vehicles.
Around 40,000 visitors are expected on the first day with the launch of a massive campaign in Qatar and neighbouring countries such as Saudi Arabia and Oman and as the festival coincides with school vacation, he added. Around 40,000 gifts will be distributed to children during the festival, Salem said.
