Doha: More than eight million scrap tyres will be removed from a dumping ground in Umm Al Afai area.
The scrap tyres, which were being dumped in the ground for several years, will be taken care of as per contracts signed between the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning and several companies.
The dumping ground has now been closed down as it contains some 8.5 million scrap tyres.
At least 500,000 abandoned tyres are accumulating in the country each year, according to officials. Of the total 2,800 tonnes of the collection of solid waste per day, 1,800 of waste is domestic.
The issue was earlier raised by the Central Municipality Council (CMC) member Mohammad bin Saleh Al Khairain at a CMC session.
The Ministry later said in a letter to CMC that the ground in Umm Al Afai area will be cleaned soon.
The Ministry of Environment has already been notified about the issue, a report said yesterday.
