MUMBAI--Veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare, who was shot at in Kolhapur on February 16, died at Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai Friday, hours after he was brought there in an air ambulance from the Kolhapur hospital where he was being treated earlier.

According to hospital sources, Pansare passed away around 10 pm. Dr T P Lahane, who accompanied Pansare, said he died due to heavy bleeding in the lungs.

Pansare, who spearheaded anti-road toll agitation, and his wife Uma were shot at by motorcyle-borne assailants near their house in Kolhapur when they were returning home from their morning walk. Both were taken to a city hospital where they were being treated.

Though doctors in Kolhapur were able to remove bullets from Pansare’s body through a surgery, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Monday ordered an air ambulance for shifting him to Mumbai following a request from his relatives.
