Doha: In one of a series of its outreach activities for high school students, Qatar University (QU) College of Pharmacy hosted 21 grade 12 Qatari students from Umm Hakeem Secondary Independent Girls School to orient them on the pharmacy profession and training, sponsorship, post-graduate study and future employment opportunities available to them.
The outreach aims to engage Qatari female students on the contribution of pharmacists and healthcare professionals to the country’s development in line with the goals and values of National Health Strategy and demonstrate the college’s teaching/learning environment which combines classroom theory and on-site practical experiences at its partner sites.
The programme, led by Dr Mohammad Diab, Associate Dean, Outreach & Engagement, included interactive skits in the college’s professional skills labs, a presentation by Teaching Assistant Reem Al Mannai on ‘Top 10 Reasons to Become a Pharmacist’, information on the college’s accreditation and a discussion with current bachelor and post-graduate students and faculty.
“It’s great to know about the accreditation as it means that the college and its programmes have an important mark of quality and standards,” said student Maha Alemadi.
In discussion with Dr Diab, Dean Dr Ayman Al Kadi and Assistant Dean, Student Affairs, Alla El Awaisi, students learned about sponsorship opportunities open to Qatari pharmacy and pre-pharmacy students from QU, Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medical and Research Center and Supreme Education Council, among others. They also learned of changes and developments in the profession and the college’s role in partnering with leading healthcare organisations to implement them.
Dr Diab said: “The college is committed as a key partner to advancing the pharmacy profession in Qatar and encouraging Qatari females to consider it a meaningful career that has a positive impact on the health and welfare of society. We hope outreach programmes will engender a better understanding of the profession and the role the college plays in the healthcare sector”.
