DOHA: Human rights experts from the US and Europe will talk about freedom of speech in their societies at a global conference on the issue in the Arab world that begins here tomorrow.
The two-day event is being held by National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and Aljazeera Network’s Human Rights and Public Freedom Department at Ritz-Carlton.
The event coincides with Arab Day for Human Rights and will focus on identifying and tackling challenges facing the practice of freedom of expression in the Arab world.
Experts from the West, in particular, will speak about best practices in the area of freedom of speech in their societies and tally notes with their counterparts from the Arab world where the record of human rights and freedom of expression is not so enviable.
Also lined up for discussion are issues related to legislations in the Arab world to protect people’s basic rights and how far they are effective and implemented and whether changes are required. The role of civil societies and national human rights committees of Arab states in protecting and enhancing basic rights will also be debated and opinions exchanged. the peninsula
