Doha: Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, Aspetar put together some tips on maintaining muscle mass while fasting during Ramadan.

This is part of its Healthy Ramadan series initiative. In a tweet, it advises people to make sure to consume a proper amount of protein at Iftar, Suhoor, snacks, and post training within your calorie needs; keep you training routine and have a recovery snack post training such as chicken sandwich, milk with fruit, yogurt with fruit.

It added, “You may use sports supplements as part of an organised meal plan, if the appetite is low or your training is high intensity – contact your sports dietitian to identify safe sports supplements if needed; and get enough sleep.”

Meanwhile, on a separate Healthy Ramadan video, it highlighted that elite athletes can perform intensive training sessions during Ramadan.

“Elite athletes or professional athletes can train during Ramadan,” Aspetar said.

“Moderate intensity technical training sessions or gym or muscle-strengthening sessions can be performed both before or after Iftar and high-intensity sessions to develop or maintain fitness should be performed after Iftar,” it said.
