DOHA: Al Gharrafa Health Centre joined Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) Hand Hygiene campaign as many people die every day around the world from infections acquired while receiving health care.

Campaign is held under the slogan ‘Avoid infection: Clean your Hands’ by organising various lectures to notify their employees about the risks and dangers of not following the five moments.

PHCC, following the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, promotes the five moments for hand hygiene, before patient contact, before an aseptic task, after body fluid exposure risk, after patient contact and after contact with patient surroundings.

Dr Azza Majali, Manager of Al Gharrafa Health Centre, said: Hands are the main pathways of germ transmission during health service; hence, washing hands is the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent health care-associated infections. These infections occur when germs are transmitted by health-care providers’ hands and the most common are urinary tract and surgical site infections, pneumonia and infections of the bloodstream.

Dr Ahmad Musallam Al Hamadani, General Practitioner at Al Gharrafa, explained that thousands of people die every day around the world from these infections while receiving healthcare.

He reminded the participants about the five moments in hand hygiene and stated that “any healthcare professional who is involved directly or indirectly with the patient needs to be concerned about hand hygiene and should be able to follow them correctly.”

Other health centres such as Umm Ghwalina, Al Rayan and Al Jumiliya prepared lectures to warn employees about the risks of not doing the five moments of hand hygiene.
