DOHA: Qatar University’s College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) is focusing on strengthening synergies among various disciplines as one of its thrusts to further increase the number of quality researches which create great impact to the society.
Mohamed Ahmedna, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, said collaborative work through synergies would lead to studies which have impact on issues of national importance and producing well-rounded graduates fit for the current demand of the market.
He was speaking at yesterday’s CAS Annual Research Day which saw presentations of the best researches conducted by students from various departments including Health Sciences; Biological & Environmental Sciences; Chemistry & Earth Sciences; Mathematics, Statistics & Physics; Social Sciences; Arabic Language; English Literature & Linguistics; Humanities and Mass Communication.
Increasing research portfolio in areas of national priorities and diversifying programme offerings including graduate studies are among the other approaches Ahmedna stressed the College is focusing on to improve its research capacity and productivity in the future.
CAS has already achieved a lot in terms of research both within the university level and at the national level. Recently, the College was granted over QR46m for its 11 National Priorities Research Program (NPRP) projects and a total of over QR2m for 19 projects in the Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP) under the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF).
In terms of internal grants, the College recently won 12 university grants, 29 startup grants and 33 student grants. Recognising students as key pillar to research productivity, the Annual Research Day showcases student research to key stakeholders.
It also features a competition for best student research awards. During the event the best posters were displayed, among which four projects would be chosen to receive awards.
