Town official slain in Davao

DAVAO CITY: Gunmen on motorbikes shot and killed an elected town official in Davao Oriental, police confirmed yesterday.

Davao Oriental police chief Superintendent Jose Carumba said Romie Almacin, elected councilor of Governor Generoso town, was on his way to his farm aboard a motorcycle when he was attacked by four assailants in Tibanban village past 8pm on Sunday.

Almacin succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in the back and neck. 

Jet crashes into sea off Taiwan

Taipei:  A Mirage 2000 fighter jet, which was on a flight training mission, crashed into waters off northwest county Hsinchu in Taiwan yesterday morning, according to reports.

Two pilots have been rescued following an ejection from the craft before the crash, China’s News Agency reported.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The latest accident came five days after an F-16 fighter jet crashed during a routine training in waters near southwest Taiwan’s Chiayi County.

Three new wind farms approved

 

MANILA: The Philippines has approved three wind farm projects that will generate 208 megawatts, enough to power more than 40,000 middle-class homes, an energy official said yesterday.

The wind projects will be the first to benefit from an incentive scheme which aims to ensure half the country’s energy comes from renewable sources by 2030, compared with about 39 percent currently, the official said.

The three projects are due to be operational by early 2015.

Majority reject mayor’s remark

TOKYO: A large majority of Japanese people disagree with outspoken Osaka mayor Toru Hashimoto, who said women forced to provide sex during World War II were a military necessity, polls issued yesterday said.

In a poll of 1,550 Japanese households conducted by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, 71 percent of respondents said Hashimoto’s comments were “inappropriate”. In a separate survey among 3,600 households by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, 75 percent of those who answered said the comments were “problematic”.

Basri is new Indonesian FM

JAKARTA: Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono yesterday named the country’s investment chief as the new finance minister, putting him in charge of Southeast Asia’s top economy at a time of major challenges.

Chatib Basri, who is taking on the role ahead of elections in 2014, replaces Hatta Rajasa, who was stand-in finance minister for a few weeks after the previous incumbent left amid growing complaints about his reformist agenda.
