DOHA: The Traffic Department under the Ministry of Interior has launched an awareness drive ‘Yellow Box Campaign’ to educate motorists on consequences of stopping vehicles between traffic signals at intersections, local Arabic daily Al Sharq reported yesterday.
According to traffic rules, stopping vehicles at an area or square-shaped box highlighted with yellow lines connecting the four traffic lights at an intersection is a punishable offence.
Any motorist found violating the rule may be fined QR500 and will record three points against his or her licence. Under the points recording system, a driver’s licence with 14 points (first time) is suspended for three moths.
The Public Works Authority (Ashghal), responsible for maintaining roads and other public infrastructure, is busy repainting ‘yellow boxes’ across the country to make them more visible to motorists.
According to road safety experts, yellow boxes at intersections are some of the most dangerous and accident-prone places where motorists need to be more vigilant while crossing.
