Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has been endorsed as the model for implementing occupational and environmental health standards for the region’s healthcare institutions, at a workshop held recently in Bahrain.
The workshop ‘Developing Mechanism and Plans of Action for Applying Occupational and Environmental Health Standards for Accreditation Hospitals and other Healthcare Facilities’, focused on formulating mechanisms and action plans for implementing occupational and environmental health standards in the region.
At the workshop, attended by officials of the executive office of the GCC Ministers of Health, HMC proved to be the only healthcare institution in the region that has demonstrated optimal implementation of standards.
Delegates from Qatar included Mohamed Babiker El Nimah, Head of the Occupational Health and Safety Department, HMC, and Leo Sigual Dote, Safety Instructor,  at the department, as well as representatives of the Supreme Council of Health and Qatar Petroleum.
El Nimah said the experience HMC attained during the process for Joint Commission International accreditation enabled it to fully implement occupational and environmental health standards, placing the corporation at the forefront in the field in the region.
“During the workshop, we reviewed how occupational and environmental health standards are being implemented in our hospitals. Participants were impressed with our methodologies and endorsed HMC as a model for implementing occupational and environmental health standards in the GCC,” he said.
Dr Huda Al Noimi, Executive Director, Occupational Health and Safety Department, HMC, said: “We are honoured to be elected as a model in implementing occupational and environmental health standards in the region.
“The achievement reflects the hard work and efforts we made to implement these standards throughout all HMC facilities.”
Dr Al Noimi said HMC’s accreditation process had facilitated full implementation of the occupational and environmental health standards.  “Moreover, our access to external and internal expertise, facilitated by HMC, and working with the Supreme Council of Health on occupational and environmental health issues made us attain this rank in the GCC,” she added.
