DOHA: A criminal court has sentenced an African national to a year in jail for using and circulating counterfeit US dollar bills in the country.
The convict used the dollar bills at different places, including moneychangers.
Some 16 bills of the denomination of 100 were used by him to buy gold ornaments.
The notes were sent to the forensic laboratory which confirmed that they were counterfeit.
During investigations the police raided the place where the convict stayed and recovered 7,900 fake dollar bills from his shoes.
The convict, a Nigerian, is to be deported after he has served the jail term, according to the court verdict, local Arabic daily Al Watan reported yesterday.
