DAVAO CITY: Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a Danish national in Agusan on Thursday, police said yesterday.

Superintendent Martin Gamba, spokesman of Caraga region police, identified the victim as Egon Jansoe. Jansoe died while he was being rushed to a local hospital following the shooting incident in San Teodoro village in Agusan del Sur province. Jansoe’s Filipine partner, Marivic Plaza, was injured. Police have launched an investigation to determine the identities and motive of the suspects.

Gun violence is common in southern Philippines where leftist rebels, Muslim insurgents and criminal gangs possess the bulk of 1.5m unlicensed guns.

COTABATO CITY: A driver died of cardiac arrest while chasing the driver of another truck that had swept his truck, while a woman was killed when a passenger van turned turtle in separate incidents yesterday in Central Mindanao.

Kidapawan City police said Simeon Antonio, 66, died with his hands pressed on his chest, following a heart attack after he failed to overtake a fleeing vehicle that had hit one side of his truck.

The incident was preceded by the death of a teacher, Cecile Maliga, in a highway accident in Koronadal City several hours earlier. Maliga was one of 10 passengers of a van that turned turtle on a remote stretch of the Koronadal-Gen Santos City Highway.
