DOHA: Law-enforcement agencies rounded up a number of runaway workers and illegal vendors during a two-day drive that coincided with the National Day.
The arrests were made on the streets as well as at and near the venues where National Day celebrations were held in different parts of the country.
During the campaign, sleuths from the Search and Follow-Up department of the Interior Ministry nabbed a number of workers who had escaped their sponsors.
The public security personnel also launched a crackdown on illegal vendors in different areas who, taking advantage of the holiday and festive mood during the National Day, were involved in illegal vending activity, Al Sharq reported.
Illegal vending is a common practice with some low-income workers. They sell things like cheap watches, pirated movie and music CDs and DVDs, books, clothing and eatables like vegetables and fruits — the latter mostly in the Industrial Area.
