DOHA: A team of five young debaters from QatarDebate will participate in the World Schools Debate Championship (WSDC) in Turkey next week.
This is the fifth consecutive year that Qatar will be taking part in WSDC.
Qatar will be represented at WSDC by Abdullah El Emadi, Haya Al Thani, Nora Al Naemi, Jassim Al Thani, from Doha College and Saad Al Suwaidi from Newton International School.
WSDC brings brightest students and best debaters from all over the world.
This year’s tournament will be attended by 50 countries.
The international debating community is celebrating 25th anniversary of WSDC this year in Turkey.
This year, QatarDebate invested in two additional Qatari students to benefit from the unique learning experience enjoyed by Team Qatar. The observers are Ali Al Ansari, who is 14 and from Qatar International School and Eman Al Sulaiti, Qatar’s youngest debater at 12, from Doha College. Both students have been able to join in some of Team Qatar’s practice sessions and will be travelling to Turkey to actively observe the competition. Both students are being coached as the next cohort of WSDC Team Qatar debaters.
“Our strategy of exposing our young students to subject experts, intense debate skills practice and the habit of critical thinking around philosophical issues, equips them with intellectual and tactical stamina necessary to withstand the highly competitive environment of WSDC,” said Dr Hayat Maarafi, Executive Director of QatarDebate.
Team Qatar, like all the teams participating in WSDC, are given a month to prepare for four of the eight topics that will be debated in Turkey. The other four, known as impromptu motions, will be given an hour before the competition.
