ISLAMABAD: Pakistani police have arrested three men and seized 100 kilograms of explosives in a raid in the capital Islamabad, officers said yesterday, following two deadly Taliban attacks on military targets.
The swoop last Monday at a house in Tarnol, in the city’s southwest, also recovered fuses, detonators, wires and other bomb-making material, police said.
News of the raid came as jets and helicopters bombarded suspected militant positions in Pakistan’s lawless tribal districts in retaliation for two major Taliban attacks targeting security forces.
At least 25 people have been killed in the air strikes, according to officials.
Food authority to open offices
LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA), after two years of being functional, is set to extend its operations to five districts by July, it was learnt.
The authority was established on July 2, 2012, to ensure the quality of food in the province. While the PFA has been operating in the provincial metropolis since then, it had had no setup in other districts.
The authority is making final arrangements to open an office in Faisalabad in March.
The government has allocated Rs100m for offices in Multan, Rawalpindi and Gujranwala. However, the authority is not sure when the funds would be released. Approval of Rs35m for the office in Faisalabad was granted last year.
The PFA had advertised 27 vacancies for its Faisalabad office. It received 3,000 applications for nine food safety officer posts and 18 assistant food safety officer.
Restrictions on tobacco ads
ISLAMABAD: After a two -and-a-half-year delay the government of Pakistan has issued regulations to restrict tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS) across the country, but a lack of human and financial resources hinder its implementation at the federal level.
A senior official at the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination who wished not to be named said this is the first legislation on tobacco control in the country after the devolution of the Ministry of Health under the 18th Amendment.
