DOHA: The American Chamber of Commerce Qatar (AmCham Qatar), in partnership with the US embassy, yesterday launched ‘Discover America — USA Week Qatar’, to celebrate American culture, commerce and friendship in Qatar.
With activities in partnership with Qatar Airways, Qatar Chamber, Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q), Qatar Happening and others, the one-week festival will open on American President’s Day on February 16. From a high-level seminar for business leaders to an authentic American chili cook-off, the event has something for everyone to enjoy.
Dana Shell Smith, US Ambassador, said: “From sports to commerce, education, and culture, the event will highlight aspects of our partnership with Qatar and the Qatari people. We are proud to support this exciting week of events.”

The organisers announced activities at a press conference yesterday. A special edition of AmCham Qatar’s Distinguished Speaker Series will be held on February 17, featuring Rodney Slater, US secretary of transportation under president Bill Clinton. Slater will speak on infrastructure and transportation investment opportunities in the US. A half-day seminar ‘Doing Business in the US’ will be held on February 18 in partnership with Qatar Chamber for Qatari firms and business people looking to invest in the US or expand business there.
Experts and lobbyists will intelligence and insight into the US economy, tax and legal systems.
AmCham and Middle East Business Solutions will host the First Annual Chili Cook-off on February 21. Chili will be judged on spiciness, flavour and originality in a blind taste test, guaranteeing a fun day for the family. AmCham Qatar’s Fifth Annual Golf Tournament will take place on February 22. It is held at Doha Golf Club every year. About 70 golfers will play 18 holes of Texas Scramble, competing for prizes in categories, including Longest Drive and Closest Shot to the Pin.
Classic American films will be screened on February 16-17 at 5.30pm at Hamad Bin Khalifa University Student Center in partnership with NU-Q.
The Peninsula
