DOHA: Applications are called for the second annual awards instituted in the name of late Qatari photographer Ali Hasan Al Jaber of Al Jazeera Channel by the Qatar Human Rights Committee (QHRC).

Applications could be submitted through pr@nhrc.qa.org before March 6 and competitions will be held under three categories as news photographs, news reportage, and short documentaries.  Submissions for the competition should have more focus on humanitarian aspects rather than political aspects. Photographs, news reports or documentaries shouldn’t have been submitted for any other competition or won prizes before. They should have been produced or published in 2012.

Winners will be announced at a special event and $5000 will be awarded for each category.

Al Jaber was killed in an ambush outside the town of Benghazi during the peak of the Libyan uprising early in March 2011.  The award was instituted in 2012 and the first award was given to a wheelchair-bound Palestinian photographer, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Othman. As many as 40 contestants vied for the award. Among them only six were short-listed before selecting the winner.      The Peninsula
