BEIRUT: At least two people were killed and three others injured in a sniper fire exchange in Lebanon’s northern city of Tripoli, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.
Elsewhere, a shell exploded in Tripoli’s Bab al-Tebbaneh neighborhood. Gun shots were also heard during the day, which turned out to be celebratory fire following Hassan Srour’s arrival to the city, the NNA said last night.
Tripoli has repeatedly been the locus of sectarian conflict linked to the troubles in Syria between pro- and anti-Syrian regime gunmen from Sunni and Alawite groups, whose rival districts Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, respectively are divided by main thoroughfare Syria Street.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that demonstrators cut the international road that joins Tripoli and Beirut over local gunman Jihad Dandashi's arrest.
Hassan Srour, a Lebanese man involved in the Tal Kalakh clash in Syria was delivered to Lebanese authorities earlier on Thursday after having been detained by rebels in the Tal Kalakh ambush.
In late November, a report emerged that 22 Sunni men from the northern city of Tripoli were ambushed by regime forces in the Syrian town of Tal Kalakh.
Several bodies allegedly of Lebanese men who were part of the group involved in the fighting have been handed over by the Syrian authorities in the weeks following the incident. (QNA)
