DOHA: The 24th congress of International Traffic Medicine Association (ITMA) in Doha in November will focus on human behaviour which leads to road accidents.
The conference to be held in the region for the first time will be organised by Dar Al Sharq and sponsored by the National Traffic Safety Committee.
An agreement was signed between Abdullatif Al Mahmoud, Chief Executive Officer, Dar Al Sharq, and Brigadier Mohamed Abdullah Al Malki, Secretary of the Committee and  Chairman, Organising Committee, on Thursday.
Captain Mubarak Salim Al Buainain, Assistant Director, Public Relations Department, Ministry of Interior, Jaber Al Harami, Editor-in-Chief, Al Sharq, and Eizeldin Abdelrahman, Executive Manager, Al Sharq Media Management, were present at the signing event at Sahrq Village.
Traffic medicine has evolved to embrace all disciplines, techniques and methods to reduce the harm traffic crashes inflict on human beings. While the majority of harm results from vehicles, traffic medicine also includes injuries from all vehicles travelling over land, sea and air, under water and in space.
The forum will focus on four tracks: Law enforcement, transportation on roads, society and education and medicine. An exhibition will be held on the sidelines. Registration fee will be used to help people with disabilities in Qatar.
“The Prime Minister has instructed that the conference should come out with results and studies at the level of the Middle East to help reduce road accidents and ensure safety.
“We are keen to communicate with international organisations concerning medical and traffic safety,” said Brigadier Al Malki.
The congress under the theme ‘Traffic Medicine and road safety in fast developing countries’ will be held from November 16 to 18 at Doha Sheraton. Between 300 and 500 professionals from across the world involved in all areas related to road accidents are expected to attend.
“We thank the ministry and the organising committee for giving us the opportunity to hold the conference. Dar Al Sharq will do its best to make the conference and the exhibition a success in a way that will match Qatar’s reputation and the importance of the event, said Al Mahmoud.
Wafa Al Yazeedi, Head, Scientific Committee for the congress, said, “Being held in the region for the first time, we are looking at it to raise awareness about road safety and traffic medicine. In the Middle East, not many are aware of it as in other countries and we look forward to communicating and sharing experiences.”
She said human behaviour plays a major role in road accidents. “The most difficult one is human, you can’t control human, you can control law, you can control roads, and behaviour is a very big issue and will be discussed at the conference.”
