DOHA: Belgian co-driver Jurgen Damen was seriously injured in an accident involving car 224 (HRX Ford) that crashed around 10km from the end of the opening special stage of the Sealine Cross-Country Rally in Qatar on Monday.
Damen was treated at the scene by the event’s medical team and then transferred promptly by helicopter to Hamad General Hospital in Doha, where he remains in a critical condition.
Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) is now arranging the logistics with medical staff in Doha for the possibility of transferring Damen to Europe for ongoing analysis and treatment, an official statement released yesterday said. That decision rests with his family and his wife is due to arrive in Qatar shortly.
Everyone at the QMMF and those involved with the running of the 2015 Sealine Cross-Country Rally send their best wishes and thoughts to Jurgen’s family and friends and hope that he makes a swift and full recovery, the statement added. THE PENINSULA
