DIYALA, Iraq: Two Iraqi soldiers were killed Monday in a IS attack on a military airbase in eastern Iraq, according to an Iraqi police officer.

Four IS bombers attempted to break into the Karkosh airbase in eastern Diyala province, police captain Habib al-Shemari told Anadolu Agency.

“Security guards engaged the bombers and killed two of them,” he said.

According to al-Shemari, military forces chased the two other bombers and killed them. “Two soldiers were killed and others injured in ensuing clashes,” he said.

Iraqi forces, backed by air cover from a U.S.-led coalition, are currently engaged in a massive offensive to oust IS from Mosul, the terrorist group’s last stronghold in northern Iraq.
