Kabul: Taliban militants attacked a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, killing five policemen, officials said yesterday.
“The incident took place on Thursday night in the Gereshk district,” said Mahmoud Shah, an official in Helmand province.
An officer at the checkpoint likely helped the militants, he said.
“One of the policemen guarding the post has fled the area taking the weapons.” Separately, a member of the Nato-led international troops died ‘as a result of a nonbattle injury in eastern Afghanistan,’ the military said in a statement.
Peshawar: At least eight people were killed and 28 injured due to heavy rains in Peshawar, capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan.
Rescue sources in the city said heavy rains and hail hit Peshawar last night killing at least eight people and injuring 28 in various parts of the city.
“Four people of one family and four others died in various parts of Peshawar after the roofs of their houses collapsed due to heavy showers and hailstorms,” said Zahir-ul-Islam, a senior administration official in Peshawar. “At least 25 others, including five women, were also wounded,” he added.
