London: British Foreign Secretary David Lammy described the officially declared famine in Gaza as a moral outrage and a man-made catastrophe, following the United Nations’ confirmation of famine conditions in Gaza City and surrounding areas.
In his statement, Lammy said that the confirmation of famine in Gaza City and the surrounding neighbourhood is utterly horrifying and is wholly preventable.
He stressed that the Israeli government’s refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza has caused this man-made catastrophe.
This is a moral outrage.
The declaration comes after months of humanitarian warnings, with the UN reporting that over half a million people in Gaza are facing catastrophic hunger, the highest level on the global food security scale, indicating famine and death.
Lammy urged the Israeli government to act immediately to prevent further deterioration by allowing unrestricted access to food, fuel, and medicine.
He also emphasized the need to enable the UN and humanitarian organizations to carry out their life-saving work without obstruction, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
