ISLAMABAD: Pakistani girl, Rabia Faridi, a student of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), left for the US yesterday to present her speech at the UN General Assembly session commencing from September 22.
The title of her speech is women education. She will also receive the 2014 Youth Courage Award at the event. It is second time in the history of the country that a Pakistani student will address the UNGA session.
Meanwhile, the UAF organised a function in the honour of Rabia Faridi at Syndicate Room. Addressing the function, Rabia said that she was privileged to present a positive image of the country at the elite forum of the UN.
She said that education was a key to become the developed nation and to deal with different challenges. She said that there were numerous examples of women, who had played a pivotal role for the uplift of the country.
These personalities such as Fatima Jinnah must become a source of aspirations for the women, she added. She said that her father always encouraged her to study.
UAF Vice-Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that the UAF was taking all possible steps to provide the state-of-the-art facilities to the students to sharpen their skills.
He said that the university took the students on quota system in which rural population was encouraged to get admissions. He said: “Our rural population is having a lot of potential that needs to explored and tapped.”
He said that Rabia belonged to the outskirts of Samundri. The VC gave a cheque of Rs100,000 to the student.
Rabia is also the UN global youth ambassador on education. She is a student of MSc Hons (Plant Breeding and Genetics) and member of the Debating Club. She is also a winner of Bargad Youth Icon Award 2014.
A few months ago, Rabia Faridi had presented a speech on women education at the Convention Centre, Islamabad, where UN Special Envoy for Global Education and former UK prime minister Gordon Brown was the chief guest. Her speech was highly appreciated and admired by the participants.
